SCSI ZIP DRIVE NOTES:
Copyright 2000, by Dan H. Eicher
DOCUMENT SCOPE:
This document is intended to give the end user a step by step
guide of setting up the IOMEGA SCSI ZIP 100 drive with the
ASCSI disk controller produced by the System Ninety Nine Users
Group. This is intended as a reference document for the
99/4a only. Setting and configuration will be difference on
the SNUG SGCPU and Myarc 9640.
HARDWARE SETUP:
On the back of the drive set the following:
SCSI ID:5
Termination: On
Note: The device name will be in the form of SCSX. Where X
is the SCSI ID + 1. So SCSI ID 5 will be accessed as SCS6.
If you purchased the Macintosh version of this drive you
should have received a SCSI cable with DB25 male connectors
on both ends of the cable.
If you do not have such a cable, one can be purchased
directly from IOMEGA (approximately 10 dollars), a more
expensive, but workable solution is Belkin Part Number:
F2A047-06.
Note: The IOMEGA cable is approximately 3 feet long, the
Belkin cable is 6 feet long.
The Belkin cable is symmetrical (meaning, it doesn't matter
which end is plugged in to the zip drive and which end is
plugged into the SCSI controller.
The IOMEGA cable is labeled. The end of the cable labeled
ZIP should plug in to the back of the ZIP drive in the
connector labeled ZIP. The end with the international SCSI
symbol should plug into the back of your ASCSI card.
One end should be plugged into the connector labeled ZIP on
the back of the zip drive, the other should be plugged into
the SCSI controller.
In general (just like floppy drives the last device in a
chain needs to be terminated. So, if you were to add another
Zip drive, you would turn termination OFF on the device
closest to the SCSI card and turn termination ON on the last
device in the chain.
Here is an illustrated example:
+-------------------+ +--------------+ +--------------+
| SCSI CONTROLLER |---|ZIP DRIVE ID:5|---|ZIP DRIVE ID:6|
| | | Term. OFF | | Term. ON |
+-------------------+ +--------------+ +--------------+
My SCSI card is set for >1700
SOFTWARE SETUP:
(Note: All programs listed here should be included with the
disk you received with your card - although the versions you
have may be older).
Do avoid any potential problems all software should be
loaded with a real Editor/Assembler Module.
All programs listed here, follow the TI standard of F9
performing the "back" function.
================================================
=================== SCUZZY =====================
================================================
Load SCUZZY - Version 1.1, copyright 1994 by Brad Snyder.
This is an E/A option 5 file.
With this software we will do a low level. This may not be
necessary as most zip drives come formatted at 512 sectors
per track, but it shouldn't hurt anything either, if you do
choose to low level format.
Press any key to get past the title screen.
Choose the number, corresponding to the drive number you
wish to format.
Select 3. Format.
Select 2. 512 Sectors.
Enter the password: FORMAT
This will run from six to seven minutes.
Press CTRL-= to exit.
===============================================
================= DM12N;O =====================
===============================================
Load DM12N;O - This is an E/A option 3 program by David
Neiters. This program includes a few bug fixes over DM12M;O.
This software will do a "high level" format. Meaning it
will write the TI standard directory structure onto the
drive.
Select 1. Disk Function
Select 1. Select Drive.
Enter 6 for SCS6
Select 4. Initialize SCSI Drive
Press Enter.
Enter SCS6.
Type Y to Proceed.
Select 2. Catalog
Enter SCS6 (Should show a blank directory).
You are done and can press CTRL-= to exit.
WARNING - Do not use this program for disk management
functions like copying files, making directories etc.
It tends to be buggy and will eventually result in the
need for reformatting your zip drive to make it functional
again!!!!
On my drive Selecting option 6 - display drive
informations, returns the following:
Drive Number: SCS6
Vendor: IOMEGA
Product ID: ZIP 100
Sector Size: 512
==============================================
================= DM2K =======================
==============================================
Load DM2K - Version 1.8 by Fred G. Kaal.
This is an E/A option 5 program.
Note: 1.8 works with both a HFDC and SCSI card in the
same P-Box.
With nothing on this drive, the following figures
should be reports: Used = 72, Free= 393136.
Copy DM2K, DM2L, DM2M and DM2N to the root of the drive.
This will insure the your hard drive is functioning normally.
You can also now load this program at about the same speed as
a ramdisk by typing SCS6.DM2K!
Notice: This program is very good at trapping errors! It is
also very tolerant of the hardware environment in which it
is running. Like any fully functional program to make the most
of it, please read the documentation.

WHT SCSI NOTES
BY Ernie Pergrem
Non-ASCSI owners may purchase a 50-pin ribbon header SCSI-1
to a DB25 female connector from JAMECO (1-800-831-4242) for
$7.95 (as of this writing). The part number is 133920.
Attach one end of the ribbon cable to the card, the other
to the adapter. It's not as pretty as what we ASCSI owners
have, but it works like a champ.
